Aardvark - Orycteropus afer
The aardvark (Orycteropus afer) is the sole surviing species in its order, the Tubulidentata.

Aardvark means "Earth pig" in Afrikaans, a language of South Africa. The aardvark is a solitary, shy, nocturnal animal. Aardvarks live in African savannas, open grasslands, woodlands, and scrub.

Aardvarks live throughout Africa, south of the Sahara. Their name comes from South Africa's Afrikaans language and means "earth pig." A glimpse of the aardvark's body and long snout brings the pig to mind.

Aardvark or Antbears are widely distributed around Africa. They are not found around equatorial forest and northern desert regions.

Aardvark
Not only are aardvarks (Orycteropus afer) listed before any other animal in the dictionary, but their names also have an interesting history.

Aardvarks
The name aardvark comes from a word meaning "earth pig." Although the aardvark, endemic to Africa, shares some similarities with the South American anteater, the two are not related.

Steenbok use old aardvark burrows as places to raise their young, and as refuges from predators.

Usually two or three, but occasionally up to six, kittens are born in an old porcupine or aardvark burrow, under a bush or in a rock crevice.

The vixens typically give birth to between 2 and 8 pups in a den which is usually a disused burrow dug by another species such as the aardvark.

The warthog makes its den either under a rock or in a sheltered burrow, but, more often, it will sleep and breed in abandoned aardvark dens. When the family enters the underground den, the young climb down head first.

During daylight hours it lies down in tall grass or in old burrows of aardvark and porcupine. The predominant prey are rats and mice with the vlei rat Otomys angoniensis and the multimammate mouse Praomys natalensis being preferred.

They are active only during the day; as soon as the sun sets, they retreat into their dens (often abandoned aardvark dens) and do not leave until dawn. The den is not only a hiding and resting place but also a nursery. Gestation takes six months.

The breeding female gives birth in a grass-lined burrow that is usually an abandoned aardvark hole. The average litter size is about 12 puppies. The pups remain in the den with their mother for about 3 to 4 weeks.

Pups are born in a den, usually one dug by an aardvark. Weaning takes place at about 10 weeks. After 3 months, the den is abandoned and the pups begin to run with the pack.

To sleep and for protection from predators, they retreat into underground dens " usually deserted aardvark burrows.

Recent findings indicate that they may share a phylogenetic relationship with aardvarks, hyraxes, manatees, and elephants. This group is small and only represented by 1 family known as Macroscelidae.

An aardwolf doesn't have powerful claws or forelegs like an anteater or aardvark, so it can't dig out the termites. It has to stand beside or on top of the mound to lick up what it can.

It also became apparent that Condylarths had evolved into other mammals as well, namely the aardvark (Tubulidentata) and the nail-less whales and dolphins (Cetacea).

They prefer rocky hills and outcrops, as they must have shelter during the day. They often take shelter in caves or Aardvarks' holes. They also build dens which can be up to 65 ft-long with a 6 ft-deep living chamber.

This may be a cave, a hollow under a rock, or an abandoned aardvark burrow where the temperature conditions are constant.

Warthogs sleep and rest in holes, which at times they line with grass, perhaps to make them warmer. Although they can excavate, warthogs normally do not dig holes but use those dug by other animals, preferably aardvarks.

In contrast, there is just one canid, one monkey, and one antelope. I do include three bears, one seal, one hyena, one pig, and five cetaceans, plus such absolutely unique mammals as Aardvark, pangolins, colugos, a monotreme, and three marsupials.
