ADDAX, a genus of antelopes, with one species (A. nasomaculatus) from North Africa and Arabia. It is a little over 3 ft.

(d´ks), large, desert-dwelling antelope. It is a single species, Addax nasomaculatus. The addax is yellowish-white in color, has a brown mane and throat fringe, and may stand as high as 42 in.

Addaxes live in the barren deserts of northern Africa, where they browse on any available scrub plants. These large antelopes are well-suited for desert life.

Addax once occurred throughout the deserts and sub-deserts of North Africa from the Atlantic to the Nile. However, by the late 1800's this range was already shrinking.

Addax are nearly extinct in the wild, having been eliminated from much of their original range. These antelope have been hunted for their valuable meat and skin.

Addax are herbivores, meaning they only eat plant material. The addax is a grazer; in the wild they mainly eat Aristida grasses and the inner shoots and seeds of Parnicum grass.

The addax and oryx antelopes live in arid deserts. They have other special features to cope with this habitat. They drink very little, but eat at night when it is cooler and the plants are wet with dew. They pass little moisture out of their bodies.
