The African buffalo is a large cow-like herbivore. There are two subspecies of African buffalo. The forest subspecies is about half the size of the savannah subspecies, which sees mature males stand up to 1.
The African buffalo differs from the domesticated water buffalo found in other parts of the world, although they both superficially resemble one another.
African buffalos are strong and imposing animals of the African savanna, but today few populations exist outside the confines of national parks. Females form protective herds of 1,000 individuals whilst males are mostly solitary.
Adult African buffalo have a sparse covering of short hair, which tends to thin with age (Buchholtz, 1990; Nowak, 1991; Kingdon, 1997). The body color is unpatterned, and ranges from rich red to black depending on the subspecies (Alden et al., 1995).

True buffaloes are distant cousins of the American bison. They look very different from bison, and they live in Africa and Asia.
The African buffalo is one of the most successful grazers in Africa. The buffalo inhabits swamps and floodplains as well as the grasslands and forests of the major mountains of Africa.
The African buffalo or Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a bovid from the family of the Bovidae. It is up to 1.7 meters high, 3.4 meters long, and can reach a weight of 900 kilograms.
The African buffalo, which is often confused with the Asian water buffalo, shares many of the same characteristics but is considered a separate species.

They are not in the same family that Asian and African buffalo are. However, because they resembled these old world animals, the early explorers called them by that name.
Squat and muscular, the ratel is ready for battle, having been known to attack animals much larger than itself such as the African buffalo, the gnu, or waterbuck. The ratel is omnivorous.
