The African buffalo is a large cow-like herbivore. There are two subspecies of African buffalo. The forest subspecies is about half the size of the savannah subspecies, which sees mature males stand up to 1.

African buffalos are stocky members of the cow family. The females form protective herds whilst the males are mostly solitary. Members of the herd are thought to 'vote' on which direction the herd should move.
What do they sound like?

Adult African buffalo have a sparse covering of short hair, which tends to thin with age (Buchholtz, 1990; Nowak, 1991; Kingdon, 1997). The body color is unpatterned, and ranges from rich red to black depending on the subspecies (Alden et al., 1995).

The African Buffalo
Buffalos inhabit any type of Savannah, usually close to a source of water. They are diurnal animals, meaning they live in herds. There can often be hundreds of buffalos in one herd.

The African buffalo or Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a bovid from the family of the Bovidae. It is up to 1.7 meters high, 3.4 meters long, and can reach a weight of 900 kilograms.

The African buffalo, which is often confused with the Asian water buffalo, shares many of the same characteristics but is considered a separate species.
