They African Grey parrot gets its name from its slate gray feathers. It has a very striking crimson tail and yellow eyes. Its black beak is hooked like most parrots and is extremely powerful.

African Grey Parrots are very intelligent, sensitive, loving creatures known for their ability to mimic speech. They hold the title of best mimics, although their shy temperament isn´t much given to exhibition.

African Grey Parrots have been known to have vocabularies of well over 200 words. In one case a bird named "Prudle", a male African Grey, is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as having a vocabulary of over 1000 words.

Some birds, such as African Grey Parrots, are especially prone to low calcium levels (hypocalcemia) if they have insufficient vitamin D as a result of not having adequate exposure to full spectrum lighting.
