African penguins aka jackass or black-footed penguins, Spheniscus demersus (Linnaeus, 1758), are the only penguin species found on the African continent.

The African Penguin, Spheniscus demersus, is also called the Blackfoot penguin. This penguin is found off the coast of southern Africa. Penguins are birds that cannot fly, but penguins swim very well and spend most of their lives in the sea.

African penguins are a medium-sized temperate penguin with one black band across their chest. They have a variable amount of black spotting on their chest and belly.

It was formerly placed in the genus Spheniscus and presumed to be a close relative of the African Penguin, but after its well-distinct tarsometatarsus was found, it was moved into its present monotypic genus (a genus consisting of only one species).
