Alligator snapping turtles are also referred to as alligator snappers or loggerheads. These turtles have large heads and powerful jaws. Their shells have three distinct ridges that run from front to back. They are found exclusively in North America.

Alligator snapping turtles and common snapping turtles have a very different looking appearances. The alligator snapping turtle has a long head and almost spiky shell, where the common snapping turtle has a more rounded head and a smoother shell.

Matamatas, however, are not active hunters and like the Alligator Snapping Turtle, they need less space than a large, active species. Small to medium specimens (6-10") can be kept successfully in a 40- to 60-gallon aquarium.

The Alligator Snapping Turtle, Macroclemys temmincki, is found in rivers and large streams in the panhandle. It is one of the largest freshwater turtles in the world, reaching a maximum size of 28" and weighing over 200 pounds.

This dwarfs even the better-known Alligator Snapping Turtle, the largest chelonian in North America, which attains a shell length of up to 80 centimetres (2.6 ft) and a weight of about 60 kilograms (130 lb).

An alligator snapping turtle (Macroclemys temminckii) was found in a garden of private house, Hiroshima-shi, 12 October 1999. It is said that common snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina serpentina) reproduce in Chiba Prefecture.

a muscular build with ridged shells that may measure from 50 cm long in Chelydra species to some 80 cm long in the Alligator snapping turtle (Macroclemys temminckii).

While many live near water, turtles can’t breathe underwater-they hold their breath. The Cypress Swamp exhibits yellow-bellied sliders, chicken turtles, spotted turtles, river cooters and alligator snapping turtles.
