American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) at Pea Island NWR, Dare Co., NC
Rare in North Carolina, this flock of at least 38 American White Pelicans was hanging around at North Pond, just in time for the Wings Over Water birding festival.

 


American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) nests in prairie potholes in scattered areas of the northern great plains and southwest Canada. There is also a population that nests along the Texas Gulf Coast.

American White Pelicans weigh about 16.4 pounds (7,500 grams), and measure over five feet in length, with a huge 9-foot wingspan.

American White Pelican nesting colonies are found on remote, treeless islands and are distributed mostly from the Canadian prairie, south to southern California and the Texas Gulf Coast. A large proportion of the birds nest in Canada.

The American white pelican doesn't dive into the water for its food like the brown pelican. It floats on the water and scoops up fish and water in its pouch. It holds its heads up and drains out the water and then swallows the fish.

The American White Pelican is one of the largest birds found in South Dakota. They are migrants through most of the state, but do nest in some of the northeastern counties.

The American White Pelican is different from other pelicans, in that it does not dive from great heights to catch its prey, it simply floats along the water and scoops up fish with it's enormous bill.

The American White Pelican has feathered cheeks, unlike those of other species. They breed in fresh-water marshes, constructing a bulky nest in reedbeds, numbers of birds nesting colonially. Up to four eggs are laid and incubated for 30 days or so.

The brown pelican and the American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) are the only pelican species that occur in Alabama. Five other species inhabit various habitats throughout the world.

The winter resident population of the American White Pelican varies from year to year. It is found along the coast and sometimes at large inland lakes. Flocks forage by swimming together and herding fish.

They feed on large fish by diving into the water (photos 2 and 3), a fishing technique never used by the American White Pelican P. erythrorhynchus.

They occur mostly in warm regions, though breeding ranges reach 45° south (Australian Pelican, P. conspicillatus) and 60° North (American White Pelicans, P. erythrorhynchos, in western Canada).

Other bird species include Bald eagles, American avocets, osprey, bobwhite quail, snowy egrets, yellowlegs, piping plovers, American white pelicans, sanderlings, peregrine falcons, merlins, and others that may be seen on the refuge.

Frigatebirds are notorious for their feeding habits chasing other birds until they disgorge (vomit) and catching the food in midair. The young are very slow to mature.

Pelicans do not store fish in their pouch, but simply use it to catch them and then tip it back to drain out water and swallow the fish immediately. The American white pelican can hold some 3 gallons (11 1/2 liters) of water in its bill.
