Ant-lions, Lacewings and Alderflies are related to eachother. You can tell so by looking at their heads and the large wings. The larvae of almost all species are hunters.

The Ant Eater is a very interesting mammal. The body is narrow and the fur is gray overall with black and white along the shoulders. The hair is coarse and thick, longest on the tail. The head is elongated and tapers to a tubular mouth.

Three species of fire ants inhabit the desert southwest: the Solenopsis xyloni, the Solenopsis aurea and the Solenopsis amblychila. The common name refers to the ants' notoriously nasty sting.

The Red-crowned Ant-tanager is distributed from Mexico through Central America to the Amazon Basin with a disjunct population in eastern Brazil and adjacent areas of Paraguay and Argentina.

The Little Black Ant is common throughout the world. It gets its name from its jet-black color and its small size. Worker ants are tiny, only about 1/16th of an inch long! Queen ants are bigger at about 1/8th of an inch.

The Little Black Ant lives in a well-organized underground nest with many other ants. A small mound of dirt usually reveals the entrance to the nest. This common ant also nests in rotten wood.

During the winter, to keep from freezing, they hibernate below the frost line. They usually find a rock crevice, an ant mound or a tunnel made by a burrowing animal. These winter dens are used by garter snakes year after year.

Other poisons, such as herbicides (weed killers), snail and slug bait, insecticides (flea and tick control products), pesticides (ant poison), and rodenticides (rat poison). Be careful with mouse traps, too.

In the winter, most Minnesota snakes hibernate below the frost line. They will use rock crevices, ant mounds, or tunnels made by other animals, and sometimes intertwine in large balls with species having similar hibernation habits.
