Antarctic Fur Seal
Arctocephalus gazella
The Antarctic Fur Seal (Arctocephalus gazella) is a true story of come-back success. During the early and mid 1800s this animal was hunted almost to extinction.

Antarctic fur seals feed primarily on krill, fish, and squid. Birds are eaten occasionally outside the breeding season.

Antarctic fur seals are one of the eared seals from the same family as sea lions, rather than one of the true seals like the common seal seen in the UK. Antarctic fur seals feast primarily on tiny krill, but they also hunt fish and squid.

This is thought to be due to the decline of the Antarctic Fur Seal in the late 1700s and Baleen Whales in the twentieth century.
