Insect. Also known as water scavenger beetles, aquatic beetles move their legs alternately, looking like they are trying to run underwater. They breathe by holding an air bubble underneath them as they swim.

A tiny aquatic beetle found living among decaying leaves in a Venezuelan mountain stream by Smithsonian scientists represents not only a new species but also an entirely new taxonomic genus and family of beetles.

Known from only two sites in northern Michigan, and one in Ontario, this tiny aquatic beetle is one of Michigan's rarest species. The species is a post-glacial relict requiring cold, clear streams for its existence.
