Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) is one of the most abundant species of fish on the planet. They can be found on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean congregating together in large schools.

In active fish, such as the Atlantic Mackerel (Scomber scombrus), which has nearly the same gill dimensions as the Atlantic Herring, there may be as much as 1,000 square mm of lamellae surface for every gram of body weight.

The Herring Alliance is a coalition of environmental and other public interest organizations dedicated to protecting and restoring marine wildlife populations and Northeastern U.S. marine ecosystems by reforming the Atlantic herring fishery.

In 2006, a study of razorbill diets in Maine found that Atlantic herring made up 60% of the diet, hake made up 27% of the diet, and other fish made up the remaining 13%.
