Animals Augur buzzardAuklet

AUK, a name commonly given to several species of sea-fowl.
A special interest attaches to the great auk (Alca impennis), owing to its recent extinction and the value of its eggs to collectors. (See GAREFOWL; also GUILLEMOT, PUFFIN, RAZORBILL.) ...

The stocky, heavy-billed Razorbill is the closest living relative of the extinct Great Auk. One of the rarest of all breeding seabirds in the United States, Razorbills are strong fliers, more agile in flight than many related species.

Penguin Originally this name was given to the now extinct great AUK of the North the Atlantic, and transferred in the 19th century to a totally unrelated Antarctic diving bird. Of all birds Penguins are the most highly specialized for marine life.

Pigeon guillemots (Cepphus columba) belong to the auk family, a group of birds that includes guillemots, puffins, auklets, and murrelets.

Razorbills belong to the auk family, along with guillemots and puffins. They look rather similar to guillemots but their dark feathers are black rather than chocolate brown, they are plumper and have thicker, heavier-looking bills.

Local Malagasy people named them for the unique call they send echoing through Madagascar's forests, which sounds like shif-auk. These primates spend most of their time in the trees, but don't get around in the same way that other lemurs do.

Unlike the extinct Great Auk, other Alcids have thin, medium-length wings used for rapid, buzzing flight.
