Axis deer occur in several different kinds of herds depending on their age and sex. Matriarchal herds are common and composed of adult females and their young from the present and previous year.

Axis deer normally rest during the hotter part of the day and move about at dawn and dusk. They may become nocturnal in the summer, or when molested by people.

Old World deer include the red deer, closely related to the North American wapiti, the fallow deer, and the axis deer. The only deer in Africa are small numbers of red deer found in the north in a forested area.

In the Sundarbans region of India and Bangladesh, the tiger's prey are chital (axis deer), wild boar, and monkeys. Tigers will sometimes attack porcupines.

The others are confined to islands. Species accounts from the 1970's also list the Axis Deer, an introduced species, found east of the St. John's River. There is no mention of it in the current literature.
