From a distance I thought this was a Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) if only because it was 1:30 pm and Short-eared Owls are more likely to hunt during the day than Barn Owls.

Diet The barn owl is a nocturnal hunter. It eats small mammals like mice, shrews, voles and rats. It also eats birds. It has a keen sense of smell, which along with the ability to see in low light, helps it catch its prey.

HABITAT: The barn owl inhabits abandoned agricultural fields, grain fields, forest openings, and adjacent forest. The bird must have small mammals in abundant supply and feeding areas open enough for the owl to fly and apprehend prey species.

They have soft and fluffy plumage, that makes them almost noiseless in flight. The order (strigiforomes) of owls is divided into two families; the barn owls, they have heart shaped faces , is one, and all other owls comprise the rest.

The barn owl (Tyto alba) is the least common species of owl that breeds in Florida. In addition, it is unique from the other "typical owls" in that it is the only species in its family.

The Barn Owl is strictly nocturnal. While common statewide, it is rarely seen. The other owls are more often heard than seen. The Screech Owl will roost and hunt in gardens.

@Birding is Fun: That is a bit further than I would go (I would not envy the person stuck proving that Barn Owls are the same on each continent.and actually, the IOC has them split in half, if I remember correctly).

BEST HEARING
Owls (especially Barn Owls and Great Horned Owls) have the best hearing; these birds hunt at night.

The reasons for its decline are unknown. It has been suggested that the barn owl, Tyto alba, introduced in 1949, may be responsible (Cheke & Dahl 1981).
