Barn Swallows are rarely seen in the Weaselhead/Glenmore Park area these days. Watch for them flycatching insects over the mudflats at the east end of the reservoir in mid May.

The barn swallow uses a variety of vocalizations to communicate. It has an alarm call to warn of predators and a mating call used to attract a mate.

Barn swallows migrate to the continental United States and Alaska in the spring and leave at the end of the summer.

Barn swallows usually breed between May and August, but this varies greatly with location. They usually raise two broods of chicks each summer. Both birds of a pair make the nest. They build the shell of mud, and line it with grass and feathers.

The common American barn swallow, Hirundo rustica, is steel-blue above and pinkish beneath, with a rusty forehead and deeply forked tail. The purple martin, Progne subis, is deep violet with black wings and tail.

Common Swift: The Common Swift (Apus apus) is a small bird, superficially similar to the Barn Swallow or House Martin. It is, however, completely unrelated to those passerine species, since swifts are in the separate order Apodiformes.

In North America, the common American barn swallow is still blue above and pinkish beneath, with a rusty for head and deeply forked tail. The purple martin has a deep violet with black wings and tail.

They nest in buildings, or sometimes sheds or porches, but not under the eaves like house martins - another name for this species is 'barn swallow'. Swallows build a nest cup from mud, straw and feathers.

My mom used to recite that poem to me too! I was also dubious about it, because we had a barn and I never saw robins inside. Just Rock Pigeons, House Sparrows, Starlings, Barn Swallows, and once a Screech Owl.

Colony site occ alternated between years to avoid heavy infestations of nest parasites. Mutual vocal recognition between parents and offspring occurs shortly before fledging. Occ forage with Barn Swallows.
