(It was the Arctic, a land unknown to Europeans in the 12th century.) Never having seen a barnacle goose egg or gosling, the monks deduced that they hatched from the white "shells" that were encrusted on logs by the sea.

The Canadian Goose: The black head and neck with white "chinstrap" distinguish this goose from all except the Barnacle Goose, but the latter has a black breast and grey, rather than brownish, body plumage.

The Old World barnacle goose, B. leucopsis, so named because it was thought to grow out of barnacles attached to driftwood, is very similar to the brant and is an occasional visitor to North America.

On 11/15/03 about 20 people visited the end of Waupoppin Canal at Lake Mattamuskeet to scan the Snow Goose flock for Ross's and a lone, possibly wild Barnacle Goose.

The rare Barnacle Goose has an entirely white face, a black breast, and a gray and black barred back.
Canada Goose X domestic goose hybrids have a wide variety of different markings, including extended white on head, red on bill, and red legs.
