Barred owls don’t mind getting a little wet. They will wade in water at the edge of ponds and marshes in order to catch crayfish and amphibians.

Barred Owls are extremely rare vagrants in the Weaselhead/Glenmore Park area and are most likley to occur when migrating waterfowl populations are at their semi-annual peaks.
The barred owl is superbly adapted for night hunting. Its keen hearing allows it to find food in total darkness, provided the prey animal moves slightly.

Barred Owls begin courtship activities in February with breeding occurring between March and August. They are monogamous and breed for life, using the same nest year after year. Males hoot and females give contact calls.
Barred owls begin nesting in March. They nest in hollow trees, in abandoned nests of other animals or in nest boxes. The female lays two or three white eggs, which hatch in 28 to 33 days. The newly hatched young are covered with fine white down.
