Food
Bass are carnivorous, eating anything that moves. Their main diet is fish, such as, sunfish and shad. They will also take crayfish and aquatic insects when other foods are hard to find.

Older bass prefer rocky, shallow areas of lakes and rivers and retreat to deeper water during high water temperature periods. Most bass do not travel great distances and those in streams spend all season in the same pool.

Striped bass eggs hatch from 29 to 80 hours after fertilization, depending on the water temperature. Larvae at this point have an average size of 3.1 mm. The mouth forms in two to four days, and the eyes are unpigmented.

It feeds on both salt and fresh water fish, including pike, trout, bass, flounder and herring. When diving for food, this bird may reach as far as 200 feet under water to catch its prey. The conservation rating for the Common Loon is Least Concern.

Populations are in decline due to; disease, upland and aquatic habitat alterations and destruction, as well as the introduction of predators. The biggest threat to the species is the bullfrog and introduced warm fresh water fish, such as bass.
