Beaded lizards are carnivorous. In the wild these lizards hunt small mammals, lizards, birds and will readily eat eggs. Beaded lizards are one of only a few lizards with actual venom. The venom is stored in grooved pits at the base of each tooth.
Beaded lizards play a pivotal role in the desert ecology of the American southwest. By feeding on the eggs or young of small desert inhabitants, beaded lizards help control their populations.
Beaded lizards eat just a few large meals a day, which means they don't have to spend a lot of time foraging. In fact, they spend more than 95% of their time hidden in shelters, like rocky crevices or burrows.
30 inches from head to tail, the Mexican beaded lizard's head is broad and flat with poison glands at the lower jaw. Body is long and heavy, but not quite as stout as that of the gila monster.
