The Sun Bear
The sun bear is a rather small member of the bear family which makes its home in the lowland tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. It is covered with a black coat made of sleek, short hairs.
The Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) wanders the frozen arctic regions throughout much of the year. At the southern limit of their range on the Hudson Bay, a number of these animals are put ashore in the late summer with the melting of the pack ice.
Bear Country does sometimes take in orphaned bear cubs. We have a very famous cub named Coconino. Some hikers found her in 1990 at Big Bear in California. Her eyes were still closed and her umbilical cord attached, an obvious newborn.

Polar bear cubs remain with their mothers for 1.5 - 2.5 years, depending on the region, and sometimes even longer. In some areas where the marine ecosystem is less productive they may remain with their mothers for 3.5 - 4.5 years.

The polar bear has fur on the soles of its feet that helps protect it from the cold and ice and prevents the polar bear from sliding on the ice. The polar also has some webbing between its toes that help it paddle in the water.
The polar bear is a smart hunter. It will spend hours beside the breathing hole of a seal in the ice. When the seal emerges for air, the polar bear will use its claws to grab the seal. This instinct came into play after the Fall.
While all bear species have shown adaptability in coping with their surroundings and environment, polar bears are highly specialized for life in the Arctic marine environment. Polar bears exhibit low reproductive rates with long generational spans.
The brown bear and grizzly (left) have received a "bad rap" in the media. Headlines of bear attacks on humans evoke terror and often result in the shooting of bears.

STATUS:
The American black bear is distributed throughout North America, from Mexico to Canada and California to New York.
The Grizzly is bear that can weigh up to 1,800 pounds, but most weigh in around 1,000 lbs. In the lower 48 states, they may only weigh up to 600 pounds as adults. This animal has the ability to stand on its hind legs and reach heights up to ten feet.
