Beaver. Large rodent of the family Castoridae of Europe and North America. It is characterized by its aquatic fur ( a soft under coat with a longer, rougher outer coat) , rounded head with small ears, scaly and fattened tail, and webbed hind feet.

Beavers on the Comeback: The European Beaver (Castor fiber) was hunted almost to extinction in Europe, both for fur, and for castoreum, a secretion of its scent gland believed to have medicinal properties.

Beavers are found in streams and lakes in both remote and settled areas. Using their huge front teeth, they can fell very large trees and branches. They prefer oak, ash, elm, willow, poplar, and birch trees.

Beaver Lodges and Dams: Beavers build sophisticated lodges out of sticks and mud. The dome-shaped lodge is built in water and only has underwater entrances.

Beavers mate for life, but if one mate dies, the other one will find another mate. Beavers mate when they are about three years old. Mating season runs from January and March in cold regions in late November or December in the south.

Beavers build lodges up to 3 ft (91 cm) high and 5 ft (1.5 m) wide of sticks and mud; the entrances are below water level, with ramps leading to the living quarters, located on a platform above water level.

The beaver is one of Canada's famous animals. These small creatures live in ponds, lakes, rivers etc close to trees.

Beaver teeth grow continuously throughout their lives and beavers must gnaw on trees to keep their teeth from getting dangerously long.

Beavers are famously busy, and they turn their talents to reengineering the landscape as few other animals can. When sites are available, beavers burrow in the banks of rivers and lakes. But they also transform less suitable habitats by building dams.

Beavers have dark brown fur; large chestnut colored incisors; a black scaly tail; and webbed hind feet. Beaver fur is water repellent.

The beaver is the largest rodent in North America.
It uses its tail to warn others of the presence of predators, to swim, and to stand upright. It does not use it to build dams.

Each beaver pond is inhabited by one beaver family: two adults and usually 2-4 kits (very young beavers) and the yearlings from the previous year's litter.

IMPORTANCE: The beaver played an important role in the early history of North America. Native Americans trapped the beaver for fur and for food.

The beaver (Castor canadensis) is Florida's largest rodent, normally weighing 30-50 pounds.

Beavers have very large teeth in proportion to their skull. Their teeth and are super-sturdy thanks to a coating of tough enamel. This enamel is orange to chestnut brown in color. Beavers' teeth grow continuously throughout their lives.

Beavers are active during the day (diurnal) but become nocturnal with human encroachment. They don't hibernate. Beavers build dams to create deep water needed for protection. The dams are made of branches, grass and mud.

Beavers mate when they're two years old. The mating season runs from November to March. Young beavers (kits) are born in May or June, with an average litter of 3 to 4.

Beavers feed on a variety of vegetation, but the inner bark of willows and cottonwood seems to be their mainstay. In summer a number of herbaceous aquatic plants and sedges are eaten.

Beavers are found along streams and rivers, small lakes and marshes. A beaver may dig a tunnel and form a den in a high stream bank or river bank.

Beavers are strict vegetarians. During the winter months, their diet consists primarily of the bark and twigs of trees and other woody plants. Before winter arrives, beaver eagerly fell trees.

Beavers may migrate during the fall if food in their territory becomes scarce. They are unable to reach buds and branches high in trees, so they cut the trees down by gnawing at the trunk. When gnawing, a beaver stands upright supported by its tail.

Beavers are considered the "engineers" of the animal kingdom in North America. Their immense power and skilled movements make it possible for them to down a tree in less than 5-minutes. The beaver is the largest rodent in all of North America.

Beavers and Their Dams
Beavers are famous dam builders. But why do they do it? Beavers swim better than they waddle, so by creating ponds they create an environment where they're more effective.

Beavers are primarily aquatic animals, and the largest rodents in North America. They have a waterproof, rich, glossy, reddish brown or blackish brown coat. The underhairs are much finer than the outer, protective, guard-hairs.

Beavers are credited with creating some of the finest waterfowl habitat in the state. Mallards and wood ducks thrive in these areas, and deer may feed on aquatic plants growing along the edges.

They have a muzzle shaped like the bill of a duck, webbed feet, and a tail like that of a beaver. The bill is not hard like that of a bird. It is actually an elongated muzzle covered with a leathery skin.

Both parents build a very large nest, often on a raised mound, island, or even a beaver lodge. Nests can take over a month to construct. Once completed, the female lays her eggs and does much of the incubating, though the male assist.
