BELTED KINGFISHER FACTS
Description
The Belted Kingfisher is a blue gray stocky bird with a white collar and white belly. The chest is gray and females also have a reddish brown chest band.

The Belted Kingfisher (Ceryle alcyon) is a widespread bird across North America, Central America and parts of northern South America.
Belted Kingfishers occur in the Weaselhead/Glenmore area from May to October. Only rarely will the species arrive in late April or stay until early November.

Belted Kingfisher: Medium kingfisher, distinct, bushy crest, white collar, and large, black dagger-like bill. Upperparts are blue-gray and underparts are white. The male has blue-gray breast band. Legs and feet are gray.
The Belted Kingfisher is a relatively large bird with conspicuous habits. At 13 inches in length with a 20' wingspan and a weight of 5 oz., it is difficult to overlook as it careens noisily about its territory.

The belted kingfisher builds it's nest in a bank or bluff usually near
water. It is lined with fish bones and scales, leaves and grass.
5 to 8 eggs are laid that are glossy white and unmarked.

The Belted Kingfisher occurs throughout most of the United States and Canada during the breeding season. In the winter it is found in the southern half of the United States south to northern South America.
Sometimes nests of other species of birds were used, including those of belted kingfishers (Ceryle alcyon), black-billed magpies, and American crows (Corvus bachyrhynchos).
The common eastern American belted kingfisher, Megaceryle alcyon, perches above the banks of freshwater streams and dives for small fish, crustaceans, reptiles, amphibians, and aquatic insects, returning to its perch to eat. It is 12 to 14 in.

In the Eastern States the common American belted kingfishers purges above the banks of freshwater streams and dives for small fish, crustaceans, amphibians, reptiles, and aquatic insects, then returning to its perch to eat.
Even tropical South America has only five species plus wintering Belted Kingfisher. In comparison, the tiny African country of The Gambia has eight resident species in its 120 by 20-mile (32 km) area.

Another cool bird, was a Belted Kingfisher which repeated dove for minnows on the shore of the river. I was able to show it to the Boy Scouts on the trip and they were pretty darn impressed and the coolness of such an awesome bird.
