Description
The Beluga is the only species of whale that is completely white. Calves are born gray and become whiter with age. They have no dorsal fin, but have a low ridge along their back. The flippers are short.

The beluga whale is also called the white whale or sea canary, due to its vocalizations.
Its melon (the fatty lump of tissue on its forhead) is very large and is used in echolocation.
DIET:
Beluga whales rely on echolocation to find prey. They eat octopus, squid, crabs, snails and a variety of fish.
Beluga sturgeon
The beluga (Huso huso) is a species of anadromous fish in the sturgeon family (Acipenseridae) of order Acipenseriformes. It is found primarily in the Caspian and Black Sea basins, and occasionally in the Adriatic Sea.
Beluga Whales are white in colour and are best known for their friendly-looking smile (which is actually the natural shape of their mouth). Baby beluga calves are born a grayish brown colour and turn white as they reach about 5 years of age.
Belugas come together in pods of hundreds and even thousands of individuals in the shallow waters of the arctic and sub-arctic seas. For insulation in these cold waters these whales have 10cm thick blubber and half their weight is fat.
Beluga pods tend to be unstable, meaning that belugas tend to move from pod to pod. Pod membership is rarely permanent. Radio-tracking has shown belugas can start out in a pod and within a few days be hundreds of miles away from that pod.
Beluga whales face a number of environmental threats. Industrial run-off in the St. Lawrence River has resulted in high levels of PCBs, heavy metals, and other toxins in the water.
Belugas forage for food on the seabed. This typically takes place at depths of up to 1,000 feet, but they can dive to at least twice this depth. Belugas congregate and travel in groups from 2-3 to as many as several hundred.
The Beluga is also known as the "White Whale". Beluga means "white one" in Russian.
