Beluga whale populations have been overhunted to the point where they have been wiped out in some regions.

The beluga whale is known for its milky white skin. Young are gray or pinkish brown at birth but fade to white as they grow.
The beluga whale does not have a dorsal fin.

DIET:
Beluga whales rely on echolocation to find prey. They eat octopus, squid, crabs, snails and a variety of fish.

Beluga Whales are white in colour and are best known for their friendly-looking smile (which is actually the natural shape of their mouth). Baby beluga calves are born a grayish brown colour and turn white as they reach about 5 years of age.

Beluga whales exhibit a wide range of vocalizations including clicks, squeaks, whistles, squarks and a bell-like clang.

Beluga whales face a number of environmental threats. Industrial run-off in the St. Lawrence River has resulted in high levels of PCBs, heavy metals, and other toxins in the water.

Belugas come together in pods of hundreds and even thousands of individuals in the shallow waters of the arctic and sub-arctic seas. For insulation in these cold waters these whales have 10cm thick blubber and half their weight is fat.

Q: I am doing a school report on Beluga Whales. I would appreciate a bit of information to share with my 5th grade class. Here are a few questions: How did the Beluga get its name?
