The Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris or Panthera tigris bengalensis) is sometimes known as the Royal Bengal tiger and is a subspecies of tiger.
The Bengal tiger is the second largest and the most common tiger subspecies.

Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris): At the top of the forest food chain, this mighty, endangered cat slinks through the shadows in search of spotted deer and other prey, which sometimes includes sloth bears.

The Bengal tiger (Pantera tigris tigris) is the most numerous of the endangered tiger subspecies, with probably fewer than 2,000 remaining at large in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

The Bengal Tiger (Panthera Tigris Tigris) is found in parts of Burma, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan.
The Indochinese Tiger (Panthera Tigris Corbetti) is found in parts of Eastern Burma, Vietnam and Thailand.

Although examples of both species present considerable variations in size, it is ascertained that the length of the largest-sized Bengal tiger may exceed that of any lion.

Bengal tigers, P. t. tigris, are found in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. Indochinese tigers, P. t. corbetti, are found in Cambodia, China, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. South China tigers, P. t.

According to 1995 population estimates, the Bengal tiger is the most numerous, with an estimated surviving population of 4,000. It is followed by the Indochinese tiger (1,100), the Sumatran tiger (400), and the Siberian tiger (250).

Bengal tigers, which inhabit the forests of India, have quintessential tiger appearance: a dark orange coat, black stripes and a white underbelly.

When I think of tigers, whether the white, striped Siberian tiger, or its smaller gold and black cousin, the Bengal tiger, my initial feeling is one of awe for its magnificent body and enormous strength.

Amur (Siberian) tigers may weigh as much as 360 kg (790 lb). In India, male Bengal tigers usually weigh 200-270 kg (440 - 595 lb). Male Sumatran tigers weigh 100 - 140 kg (220 - 310 lb).

However, small isolated parks may promote inbreeding and the future of the Bengal tiger is still in question.
