(bch´r), common name for African freshwater fishes as of the family Polypteridae, and particularly for those of the genus Polypterus.

The earliest actinopterygians are grouped in the subclass Chondrostei, of which only sturgeons , bichirs and paddlefishes survive today.

The first bony fish to appear were the Chondrostei (Bichirs, Paddlefishes and Sturgeons) arising about 410 MYA, and they are still around today.
