The Black-bellied Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis) is widespread across much of south and coastal Texas. In recent years it has ranged north across parts of the mid west as well.

Black-bellied Whistling-Duck: Large, colorful, slender duck with bright red bill and pink-red legs and feet. Shows white wing patch, black belly, and reddish-brown breast. Sexes are similar.

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks prefer shallow freshwater ponds, lakes, and marshes. Tree-lined bodies of water are of particular value.

The Black-bellied Whistling-duck is found from southern USA through Central and South America to northern Argentina. It prefers ponds and lakes close to trees and often near agricultural land.

Immature Fulvous Whistling-Duck could be confused with an immature Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, but has a white flank stripe, dark wings without a wing stripe and a pale rump patch.

Fulvous Whistling-Duck Dendrocygna bicolor. Historical breeder. Rare in spring, summer, and fall in Gulf Coast region. Occasional in late fall, winter, and early spring in other regions.

The Fulvous is more common than the Black-bellied Whistling-Duck which is expanding its range from Sarasota County and is sometimes seen in North Florida.
