Black-billed Cuckoo Coccyzus erythropthalmus. Occasional breeder. Uncommon in spring and rare in fall in Gulf Coast region. In other regions, rare in spring and fall, and occasional in summer. Found along forest edges and open woodlands.

Occ parasitizes Black-billed Cuckoo, rarely other birds. Breeding often coincides with outbreaks of cicadas, tent caterpillars, etc.; prey abundance may lead to production of excess eggs and thus to brood parasitism. Young hatch asynchronously.

The other cuckoos in Florida are the less common Black-billed Cuckoo, a spring and fall migrant, the secretive Mangrove Cuckoo, a rare species and resident of south-central and south Florida mangrove habitats, the uncommon Smooth-billed Ani, ...

The Yellow-billed Cuckoo may be confused with the Black-billed Cuckoo. The Black-billed Cuckoo has a black bill, smaller white spots on the tail, and a red eye.

The Pine Trail also produced White-eyed Vireo and Black-billed Cuckoos along with a decent collection of warblers.

The most widely distributed species in North America are the
yellow-billed cuckoo and the black-billed cuckoo.
