The Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is a permanent resident across the northern two-thirds of the United States as well as most of Canada.

Black-capped Chickadees are active birds who spend most of their day looking for food.

Black-capped Chickadees are members of the Family Paridae, which are small, plump, small-billed birds that are very acrobatic when feeding. Sexes are usually alike. They often roam in little bands.

The black-capped chickadee (Parus atricapillus), lively and gregarious, is a permanent resident over most of its range in the East. Both sexes have black caps, gray backs and wings, and fluffy white to buff underparts.

The species most similar to the Carolina Chickadee is the Black-capped Chickadee. The Black-capped Chickadee is slightly larger and has a lower pitch to the chick-a-dee-dee-dee call.

Not until the turn of the century was the willow tit recognised as distinct from the marsh tit in this country. Even then it was often treated as a sub-species of the black-capped chickadee.
