When my daughter was a two-year-old, our family went for a hike in the La Sal Mountains outside of Moab, Utah. We encountered a female black bear and her two cubs along the trail.

Black bears are solitary by nature. This is due to the huge amount of food and area it takes to feed each bear. However, they do come together during the mating season, as well as when food is plentiful, or when caring for cubs.

Black bears are one of three bear species that live in North America, the other two being the brown bear and the polar bear. Of these bear species, black bears are the smallest and most timid.

Black bears are considered highly efficient hibernators. They sleep for months without eating, drinking, urinating, or defecating. The length and depth of hibernation is genetically programmed to match the regional norms of food availability.

Black bears mate during May-July. The fertilized egg implants in November and the cubs are usually born in January, while the mother is denning. Newborn cubs do not hibernate, but the mother provides all their nourishment while she is hibernating.

BLACK BEAR AND MAN
The American black bear was hunted widely inthe past, although it is now a partially protected species in Canada and the United States.

The black bear has small, rounded ears, and inch long claws on its feet. The black bear doesn't have a large shoulder hump like the brown or grizzly bear. The black bear stands about three feet from shoulder to feet and its 4-6 feet in length.

The black bear has managed to be quite prolific and successful as bears go. The eighteen known subspecies can be found throughout the United States and Canada.

The black bear, like all bears, is a predator, and an omnivore. The black bear helps the environment by killing off the elderly, and weaklings of over populated prey.

Adult black bears are generally 4 - 6.5 feet in length from the tip of the nose to the rear. American black bears generally weigh between 100 - 400 pounds, but can weigh between 500 - 600 pounds. Males are heavier than females.

Asiatic black bears are considered omnivorous (eat both meat and plants); however, their diet in the wild is primarily vegetarian. These bears have very different diets based on the time of year.

DIET Black bears are omnivorous and feed on a wide range of foods, depending on what is available. Insects (particularly ants), nuts, berries, acorns, grasses, roots, and other vegetation form the bulk of their diet in most areas.

The asiatic black bear has many similarities to its American cousin. Both are medium sized, and black. The ears of the asiatic bear are large and seem inappropriately sized to the rest of its head and those of other bears.

Most Black Bears hibernate for up to seven months, and do not eat, drink, urinate, or exercise the entire time. In the South, where plant food is available all year, not all bears hibernate-but pregnant females do.

Asiatic black bears live in moist forests, on steep mountains, and in areas where the vegetation is thick. They live at higher elevations in the summer, and descend during the winter. Occasionally, they come out of the forests to forage on plains.

Florida black bears showed the highest annual use of 2-year-old and 6-year-old prescribed burns in longleaf pine-Beyrech threeawn sandhills and pine (Pinus spp.) habitat in northern Florida.

The Asian black bear, or moon bear, Selenarctos thibetanus, is found in forests from central Asia and the Himalayas to Japan. The sun bear, Helarctos malayanus, is found in tropical forests of SE Asia.

The Florida black bear dens, usually alone, in cavities in trees, banks, logs, and in caves. It also nests on the ground, particularly in palmetto thickets and tangles of gallberry, fetterbush, and sweet pepperbush. It is active primarily at night.

[77] Encounters with American Black Bears occur solely in the Americas; their interactions with wolves are much rarer than those of Brown Bears, due to differences in habitat preferences.

Some usual brood predators includes the Wolverine, American black bear, Bald Eagle, Red Fox and the Common Raven. Adult whooping cranes feel less threatened by their predators as they are likely to be attacked only by Bobcats.

The Taiwan Yuhina is 13 cm in length with a deep brown chestnut-coloured crest and a black beard stripe descending from its beak. The bird's back, wings and tail are olive brown, and its lower breast is lighter in colour.

A large antelope with heavier front, than hind quarters, a black mane that lies flat on the neck and spine, a black beard that ends at the end of the throat, and a horse-like tail with long black hair.

In the Pleistocene Age, giant beavers the size of black bears roamed the Old and New World. More recently, their range extended across northern Europe and Asia, south to the Mediterranean.
