The Black Brant breeds in Siberia, Alaska and western Canada and winters mainly down the west and east coasts of the north Pacific Ocean although some vagrants make it to Europe where they tend to mix with other subspecies of Brent Geese.

The black brant migrates from its arctic breeding grounds to the Pacific coast. White brant is an alternate name for the snow goose, which belongs to the same family, and gray, or prairie, brant refers to the American white-fronted goose.

An individual of the "Black Brant", Branta bernicla nigricans, which nests in the western Canadian Arctic and in Alaska and migrates along the west coast of North America, was identified among the Brant on Cape Sable on 12 March 1970 (B.J. and S.

They generally use the same migration routes yearly, and are only rare migrants in South Dakota. Two color forms are found, the dark-bellied "Black Brant" of western North America, and the white-bellied form of eastern North America.

The under-tail is pure white, and the tail black and very short (the shortest of any goose). They are about 60 cm long - about the size of a Mallard. The western race, formerly known as the Black Brant, is darker overall.
