Black Caiman have been hunted for their meat and their skin for a long time, and their numbers are low in many parts of their range. However, they are plentiful in Mamirauá Reserve.

 


The Black Caiman: The Black Caiman (Melanosuchus niger) is a threatened species, related to alligators.

The black caiman of the Amazon rainforest is often mistaken for an alligator, which it closely resembles.

The black caiman, M. niger, is unique among crocodilians in that much of its juvenile coloration - yellowish strips and spots - is retained well into its adult life.

Mugger crocodiles and possibly the endangered Black Caiman, are also very dangerous to humans. American alligators are less aggressive and rarely assault humans without provocation.

Particularly large anacondas may even consume large prey such as tapir, deer, capybara, jaguars, black caiman, and crocodiles, but such large meals are not regularly consumed.

Caimans range in size from the dwarf caiman which measures just over a meter in length, to the black caiman which can to grow to be nearly 5 meters long.
