Black lemurs once inhabited the northwestern part of Madagascar. There were taboos against killing them, but as natural forests were replaced by plantations this protection disappeared and they were poisoned or shot as pests.
This prosimian is a subspecies of the black lemur. Males are black while females have rufous to tan (and sometime gray) coats dorsally and on the tail, an off-white ventrum, a reddish beard, and dark extremities.

In some cases, as in the black lemur (L. macaco) the two sexes are differently coloured; but in others, especially the ruffed lemur (L. varius), there is much individual variation in this respect, scarcely any two being alike.
