Description: As their name implies, black racers are relatively large -- to 60 in (152 cm) -- fairly slender, solid black snakes. They have smooth scales, large eyes, and often have some white coloration under their chin.

I have a worm snake Celuta amaena - black snake - two Heterodons - blue racer, water snakes & several others, several salamanders new to me, a lizard and a fine glass snake - lots of fish, etc. I did best among the snakes and lizards.

It is a shiny black snake with series of thin, white to cream crossbars or spots on the back. The belly is covered with alternating black and white patches. Juveniles are patterned like adults. Mating presumably takes place in the spring.

The Eastern Worm Snake is a very small, glossy brown-to-black snake that resembles an earthworm. Also, the belly of this snake is bright pink to reddish-pink. The tail is short and it tapers to a sharp tip.

There is no question that this heavy-bodied, glossy, bluish-black snake is an impressive beast. There is also no question, as those who have kept them have learned, that they are a messy snake. Indigos are not constrictors but have catholic tastes.

The racer is the only large, black snake in New England with smooth scales. Its chin, throat and jaw are white or gray and the belly is generally dark (gray, bluish, or black) from the throat back.

I asked the guide on one of our boat trips if he knew what snake that might have been and he quickly and confidently assured me that they were Red-bellied Black Snakes.

Near a small pond Carol pointed out a very poisonous Red-bellied Black Snake. We looked in the pond for Platypus but they are not usually active during the day. We did see Rufus Night-heron.

Miscellaneous: In some areas, rat snakes are commonly called “black snakes' and are frequently confused with black racers. However, unlike racers whose scales are smooth, rat snakes have keeled scales.

Description

Known predators include the milk snake, black snake, red-tailed hawk, red-shouldered hawk, sparrow hawk, broadwinged hawk, barn owl, short-eared owl, barred owl, horned owl, long-eared owl, screech owl, fox, weasel, and skunk.

General Description ...

Australian native fauna that have been killed by eating or mouthing Cane Toads include goannas, Freshwater Crocodile, Tiger Snake, Red-bellied Black Snake, Death Adder, Dingo and Western Quoll.

This has led some people to the mistaken belief that they have seen a Red-bellied black snake, a species which does not occur in Tasmania.

Two other black snakes occurring within distribution, the black racer and eastern indigo snake, have smooth body scales.
