The "Black Squirrel" is actually a variant of the Eastern Gray Squirrel. It is thought that the black variant developed its dark coat to better absorb heat in colder climates.

Those black squirrels. The first time I saw a black squirrel was in the early 1960's and they were a rare sight.
Abert's squirrels are one and a half to two pound grayish, reddish, or black squirrels with white undersides.
Shades of gray are the most common followed by shades of brown. There are also pure white and pure black squirrels, but both are variations of the gray squirrel.

We ended up seeing five kinds: common squirrel monkeys, black squirrel monkeys, capuchins, red howlers, and one lone distant silhouetted white bald uakari. The one just barely pictured here is a common squirrel monkey.
