Black swan was an old English metaphor meaning 'that which could not exist or was impossible.' To the
English, all swans were white until news in 1697 that there were such animals living in Australia.

The sole European H5N1 case in the second half of 2006 concerned a captive Black Swan Cygnus atratus (an Australian species) that died of the disease at Dresden zoo in August. The cygnet hatched in April 2006 and lived on an ornamental pond.
