Black Tern (Chlidonias niger) Terns are gull like but slimmer, with pointed wings and beaks. In breeding plumage the black tern has a black head and underparts and gray wings. In Michigan they prefer open or swampy marsh habitat.

Status Uncommon transient, rare and local in summer. Breeds. Black Terns arrive in May (average 27 May, earliest 12 May) and transients or non-breeding birds may appear through June.
