BLACK TERN FACTS
Description
In breeding plumage, the Black Tern is dark colored with a black head, neck and chest, and gray wings. In non-breeding plumage the head is white with dark crown and naps; the underside is white and wings gray.

The Black Tern (Chlidonias niger) is a mostly black tern which breeds in on lakes, marshes, and prairie potholes of parts of the northern United States and Canada. It winters on the coasts of Central and South America.

Terns are gull like but slimmer, with pointed wings and beaks. In breeding plumage the black tern has a black head and underparts and gray wings. In Michigan they prefer open or swampy marsh habitat.

Breeding in scattered colonies, often associated with Forster's Terns, Black Terns nest low in marshes, on floating vegetation mats, muskrat houses, or on the ground near water.

This last is the beautiful roseate tern, Sterna dougalli; the other is the black tern, Hydrochelidon nigra, belonging to a genus in which the toes are only halfwebbed, of small size and dark leaden-grey plumage.

The Sooty Tern is a largish black tern with white underparts, forehead and tail streamers. There is a thin white leading edge to the inner wing. Juveniles are similar but greyer with white scallops above and a grey breast.

Genus Gelochelidon - 1 species ...

Flying the flight feathers were silver-grey catching the light and reminiscent of black tern colouring. Viewed from below the wings appeared sooty-black.
