This blackbird's song is a series of low raspy notes that ends in a descending buzz. The call is a hoarse croak.
These birds nest in colonies. The nest is a basket woven around the marsh stalks. The female lays 3 to 5 white eggs speckled with brown.

Rusty Blackbird populations were estimated at 2 million in 2004 by Partners in Flight. However, the species is decreasing by almost 10% per year.

Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus)

Abundant all year on Assateague Island, the red-winged blackbird feeds on seeds and insects.

The Jamaican blackbird can be seen in mature, wet limestone forest with a high density of epiphytes and bromeliads. It is found between 510 and 2,200 metres above sea level, but avoids hillsides with strong winds (2).

The blackbirds, meadowlarks and orioles are members of this family. These are medium to large birds with strong, pointed, unnotched bills. The plumage colors vary from iridescent black to bright colors. The wings are often long and pointed.

Female Blackbirds (Turdus merula) are brownish and not black at all!. The male is in the picture to your left, the female in the picture to your right.

I certainly did, but they were all the same species spotted the last two times I visited, Rusty Blackbirds and all.

Length is about 8 1/2" (about the size of a Red-winged Blackbird). Its under parts have streaking and fine crossbars that are not as bold as with other North American screech-owls.

The most common species nesting on restored wetlands in both years were Red-winged Blackbird, Yellow-headed Blackbird, and Marsh Wren. Other species that nested in both years were American Coot, Canada Goose, and Pied-billed Grebe.

Often nesting atop muskrat houses or on gravel islands, Forster's Terns form loose colonies ranging in size from less than 500 to up to several thousand and sometimes associate with Yellow-headed Blackbird colonies.

The loggerhead shrike (Lanus ludovicianus) is a predatory songbird about the size of a blackbird. It is bluish-gray above and white below. The wings and tail are mostly black with white patches.

: The scarlet-headed blackbird measures 24 cm and has a long, slender, very sharply pointed bill. They use their bill as a hammer, like a woodpecker, to open up vegetable matter to get at the edible part.

The Crested Oropendola is a medium sized blackbird that has a citron yellow beak and electric yellow tail feathers. It ranges in length from thirteen to seventeen inches long. The males are clearly larger than the females.

The Crested Oropendola is a blackbird that makes a pendulous nest. This bird lives in flocks in South American rain forests, grasslands, coastal areas, and marshes.

Although bluebirds aren't as common as robins or red-winged blackbirds, their sweet song and beautiful colors leave a lasting impression. They may be seen in the country as well as in suburban areas and city parks.

The telltale, delicate, red epaulet feathers of the Red-winged Blackbird contrasted against their black ones. Obviously, some predator used this area for plucking and eating their prey.
