The large blue butterfly became extinct in the UK in 1979. A campaign to recreate suitable habitat for the large blue and then reintroduce it began in the 1980s, and there are now several populations in this country.

This lively blue to blue-grey butterfly has an orange spot on the hindwing and is the only blue butterfly in Prince William County with "tails" on the hindwing.
The Eastern-tailed Blue flies close to the ground and frequents open areas.
