Since the Zoo opened in 1922, visitors have been able to see these magnificent birds roaming the grounds.
Peafowl are the largest members of the pheasant family, weighing about 14 pounds.

The Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) - also known as the Common Peafowl and the India Blue Peafowl - is native to India and Sri Lanka inhabiting dry semi-desert grasslands, scrub and deciduous forests.

India Blue Peafowl are not fussy eaters and can sustain health easily on the diet of most any gamebird. This may consist of mixed grains and a variety of greens.

The Blue Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) is famed in its native India for its appetite for snakes - even poisonous cobras - which it dispatches with its strong feet and sharp bill.
