There are two major house designs for bluebirds. The first one is the traditional square house and there is an improved design known as the Peterson Bluebird House which has a steeply sloped roof.

There are three species of these colorful North American birds. Eastern and western bluebirds have a reddish brown breast, which contrasts with their predominately blue plumage.

Bluebirds are territorial, prefer open grassland with scattered trees and are cavity nesters (similar to many species of woodpecker).

Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) - Breeding east of the Rocky Mountains from southern Canada through the mideastern Gulf of Mexico to the east coast of North America. The Eastern Bluebird is mostly seen in open and rural areas.

Bluebirds have long been thought to be a lucky sign by humans. Bluebirds are native only to North America and have been cherished throughout Texas' history. Because of its sky blue feathers, the Navajo Indians considered this bird sacred.

Bluebird populations declined greatly from the 1930s to the 1960s. The cause was habitat loss and competition from other cavity-nesting birds, especially starlings and house sparrows.

766. Sialia sialis (Linn.). BLUEBIRD. Ad.--Upper parts, wings, and tail bright blue, tipped with rusty in the fall; throat, breast, and sides dull cinnamon-rufous; belly white. Ad.

Bluebirds frequent open woodlands and farmlands with scattered trees where they build their nest in holes in trees using loose grasses and plant stems. They will also use old woodpecker holes, fence posts and nest boxes.

Fairy bluebirds live in the forest crown and are gregarious fruit-eaters. They live in pairs or small troops and keep to the evergreen lowland forest.

Fairy bluebirds can be seen congregating in small groups of six to eight birds, often with other bird species. They are constantly on the move, scurrying about in the branches from tree to tree.

Status Rare transient, very rare in summer. Formerly bred. When it was regular, it arrived during the second half of March and remained until the second half of October, with stragglers later.

Western Bluebirds can usually be found in open, parklike forests, edge habitats, burned areas and where moderate amounts of logging have occurred, provided a sufficient number of larger trees and snags remain to provide nest sites and perches.

A male Eastern Bluebird is quite a spectacular sight. Deep blue on the back, brick red on the front. Females are a paler version of the male.

Mountain Bluebirds are distinguished from the other bluebirds by the male's all blue coloration, without rusty underparts (see photo to the right). Females are much plainer (see photo #3 at the bottom of the page).

This fairy-bluebird breeds across tropical southern Asia from the Himalayan foothills, India and Sri Lanka east to Indonesia. This species is found in moist hill-forest. Two or three eggs are laid in a small cup nest in a tree.

The Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) is a member of the thrush family and can be fairly common in open woodland and meadows across much of the eastern United States and southern Canada.

The Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis, is a blue songbird that sings a melodic warble. This beautiful member of the thrush family lives in the eastern half of the USA and in southern Canada, ranging from the Atlantic coast to the Rocky Mountains.

Diet The mountain bluebird hovers just above the ground looking for insects. When it spots one, it swoops down and snatches if up. It may also swoop down on its prey from a perch in a tree.

Stanford hosts four bluebird trails (linking nest boxes) at the Dish, Lake Lagunita, the Arboretum, and the Golf Course. Trails monitored weekly during nesting season (March through the end of July). Annual data viewable at arastradero.org.

Bluebirds have a long breeding season, lasting from February through September. During the breeding season, both males and females may become very aggressive and may even fight members of the same sex to the death over mates and nest sites.

Bluebirds, Robins, and Thrushes forage on the ground and don't often visit feeders. Robins may be attracted to feeders by fruit. Bluebirds do use nest boxes placed where large open areas meet woodlands.

This has resulted in population declines for various wren, swallow, and bluebird populations. Starlings are very gregarious birds, flocking at all times with other starlings. These birds breed in bunches, feed in flocks, and migrate in masses.

The Bearded Screech is a small Screech-Owl (6 1/4 - 7 1/2 in. in length which is roughly between the size of a House Sparrow and a Bluebird).

These jack pine stands also provide habitat for the upland sandpiper, Eastern bluebird, white tailed deer, black bear and snowshoe hare, and for several protected prairie plants, including the Allegheny plum, Hill's thistle, and rough fescue.

Due to habitat destruction there has been a decline in the abundance of many of our deer, turkey, or bluebirds.
