Bongos are an extremely elusive species. The bulk of information gathered on the Bongo Antelope typically comes from studies requiring captivity . It is known, however, that the Bongo must inhabit close to dense vegetation.

The bongo is the only Tragelaphid in which both the male and female have horns. Among the various species of antelope in the African Equatorial forrest, Bongos are the largest. They are the only forest antelope to form herds.

Native people believe if they eat or touch bongo they will have spasms similar to epileptic seizures. Because of this superstition, bongos have been relatively unharmed in their native ranges.

Bongo is an African native name. Tragos (Greek) a he-goat;.elaphos (Greek) a deer; in combination referring to an antelope. Eurus (Greek) broad, widespread; keras (Greek) the horn of an animal.

Bongos have sturdy, spiraled horns that resemble those of their cousins: nyalas, sitatungas, bushbucks, kudus and elands.

* Bongos are the only forest antelope to form herds (which can range from 5 or 6 up to 50).
* Bongos are quite reclusive creatures which has made them difficult to study. Relatively little is known about their activities.
