Other Names Grindle, Dogfish, Grinnel, Cypress Trout, Mud Fish Description Amia is a Greek name for an unidentified fish, probably the bonito, and calva is Latin meaning "smooth," referring perhaps to the fish's scaleless head.

The shortfin mako shark, Isurus oxyrinchus (Rafinesque, 1810), aka mako, shortfin, short-finned mako, blue pointer, mackerel shark, blue dynamite, bonito, spriglio, paloma—is a truly beautiful animal.

MACKEREL, pelagic fishes, belonging to a small family, Scombridae, of which the tunny, bonito, albacore, and a few other tropical genera are members.

Diet
The shortfin mako feeds mainly upon bony fishes including mackerels, tunas, bonitos and swordfish, but may also eat other sharks, porpoises and sea turtles.

This family includes members of the Mackerel, Jack, Bonito and Tuna species. They are also referred to as the Common, American or Boston mackerel, Maquereau Bleu(fr.), while immature or young fish are often called Tinkers.

Yet the Fish Hawk never attempted to pursue any of them while above the surface, but would plunge after one of them or a bonito-fish, after they had resumed their usual mode of swimming near the surface.
