Box turtles are live on land; they are found in a wide variety of moist, warm wooded regions in the eastern USA. In hot weather they will burrow in the mud, swamps, and leaves of the forest, coming out only to look for food after heavy rains.

Asian Box Turtle Species Profile
This Asian box turtle has a highly domed, somewhat elongate carapace and a strongly hinged plastron. The carapace is dark brown, and most specimens bear a yellow vertebral stripe or spot on each vertebral scute.

Ornate box turtles live strictly on land. They live in dry prairies and oak savannas with deep sandy soils. The sandy soil allows them to burrow deep enough to avoid freezing in winter. They come out of winter hibernation in early to late April.

What are the main threats?

Male box turtles have a concave plastron to facilitate mating. In both sexes the plastron has a hinge between the pectoral and abdominal scutes which divides it into two movable lobes.

Eastern Box Turtle Terrapene carolina ssp. Common to locally uncommon or rare statewide. While they have declined over past two decades, box turtles still are frequently encountered (especially after rains) in, or near, forested areas.

Eastern box turtles do not appear to be territorial because they are commonly found grouped together under cover or in close proximity to each other. Eastern box turtles occupy the same home range year after year.

There two races of box turtles, but only the eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) occurs in Canada. Although it is the most terrestrial Canadian turtle, the Eastern box turtle often soaks in mud or water for a few hours a day.

Five of these species are sea turtles and one (the Eastern Box Turtle) is primarily terrestrial. The rest are semi-aquatic, inhabiting North Carolina's ponds, wetlands, and other water bodies.

Cooters and sliders belong to the pond and marsh turtles family Emydidae which comprise the largest family of living turtles, including diamondback terrapins, and box turtles.

Of the 26 types of turtle species found in Florida, the vast majority (18) are freshwater turtle species. Besides freshwater turtles, Florida is home to the gopher tortoise, box turtles, and five sea turtle species.

The upper portion called the carapace cuff and the lower called the plastron are both joined together. Most sea turtles have a reduced shell, and other species like a box turtle, can completely enclose the openings.
