Brant populations have experienced significant changes in the last century. In the 1930s, Brant numbers in North America and Europe fell when winter food supplies crashed.

or brant goose, common name for a species of wild sea goose. The American brant, Branta bernicla, breeds in the Arctic and winters along the Atlantic coast. The head, neck, and tail are black, the back brownish gray, and the under parts grayish white.

The Brant is a small goose that is normally found in the high Arctic in summer, and along U.S. coastlines in winter. They generally use the same migration routes yearly, and are only rare migrants in South Dakota.

The Brant is from the order Anseriformes. Anseriformes are birds, with over 150 species belonging to this order. The majority of these are waterfowl such as ducks, geese, screamers and swans.

Branta canadensis individuals have a black neck, bill, and head with a white strap under the chin and occasional white patches elsewhere. The body is usually brownish-gray although colors vary in some of the subspecies.

The Nene (Branta Sandwicensis) is Hawaii's state bird. Similar to the Canada Goose, the Nene is about 24 inches long, the Canada being larger at 30 inches. The head is black with buff cheeks and neck.
