Brown Bear - Ursus arctos
The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is among the largest and most powerful of all land carnivores. Brown bears have non-retractable claws that they use primarily for digging.

Brown bears dig dens for winter hibernation, often holing up in a suitable hillside. Females, or she-bears, den while pregnant and give birth during this winter rest, usually to a pair of cubs.

The brown bear has small ears and high shoulders. It can range in color from cinnamon to almost black.
It is also known as the Kodiak bear.

The Brown Bear
The Brown Bear has captured the human consciousness like nearly no other animal can. It presents an image so like ourselves that we often get caught up in the "cuteness" and forget that it is a wild animal that we are dealing with.

Brown bears are some of the largest carnivores on Earth. They hunt alone except during seasonal spectacles such as salmon spawning which causes large numbers of bears to gather together.

Brown bears occupy a wide range of habitats including dense forests, subalpine mountain areas, and tundra. Its range is the widest of any species of bear in the world.

Brown bears have furry coats in shades of blonde, brown, black, or a combination of those colors. The longer outer guard hairs of the brown bear are often tipped with white or silver, giving a "grizzled" appearance. Their tail is 4-4.8 inches long.

Brown Bears are solitary, powerful predators who can be aggressive to one another. There is a social hierarchy: adult males are dominant, and females with cubs are dominant over juvenile males and females without cubs.

Brown Bears are encountered in both Eurasia and North America. The majority of interactions between wolves and Brown Bears usually amount to nothing more than mutual avoidance.
