The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is a common resident of most of the coast line of the United States, especially the southern United States and California.

The Brown Pelican is a brown bird with a lighter tan head. It is easily recognized by its long, pouched bill that it uses to store food. This bill-pouch is made of elastic skin attached down the front of the throat.

Brown Pelicans weigh about 8.2 pounds (3,740 grams), and measure 51 inches in length, with a huge wingspan of over 6.5 feet.
Brown Pelicans feed on mid-sized fish that they capture by diving from above and then scooping or dipping the fish into their pouch, which acts as a flexible dip net.
Brown pelicans search the water for food while aloft, then dive swiftly once they have spotted their prey. It drops from the air with its wings partly folded and dives into the water—the only species of pelican to exhibit such behavior.

The Brown Pelican is a large bird that lives along the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Gulf of Mexico in North and South America. Its scientific name is Pelecanus occidentalis (Genus and species).
Diet The brown pelican is a plunge diver. It drops from the air with its wings partly folded and dives into the water to catch its prey. It is the only species of pelican that does this! It uses its bill and pouch like a net.

Brown pelicans are primarily picivorous, meaning they mainly eat fish. In the wild these birds consume fish they capture by diving from the air into the water. Occasionally the birds will also eat crustaceans.
Brown pelicans are the only species to dive into the water from 30 feet above to capture prey. After catching the prey and a lot of water, they tip their bill downward to drain the water before swallowing the fish.

The Brown Pelican is Federally listed as Endangered. The subspecies P. o. carolinensis is listed as Endangered in Delaware, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.
While brown pelicans within peninsular Florida usually nest in mangroves or other trees , white pelicans build nests right on the ground. They clear or scrape an area and rim it with dirt, sticks or other debris.
