BROWN RAT
The brown rat is considered to be a pest throughout most of its range. Still it rarely lives in occupied houses or buildings but, rather, makes its home in areas uninhabited by people.

Brown rats are the scourge of many a farm and town. They are one of the most serious mammalian pests on the planet, spoiling grain and carrying disease, yet they remain one of the most successful.

Brown Rat: The Brown Rat or Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus) is one of the best-known and common rats, and also one of the largest.

The brown rat is the larger of the two, growing up to 10 in. (25 cm) long excluding the naked, scaley tail and sometimes weighing more than a pound (.5 kg). It is commonly brown with whitish underparts and pink ears, feet, and tail.

Females have brown rather than black above and on the head with an indistinct paler eyebrow line, chestnut-buff rather than orange below, and less white on the wings. Both sexes' plumage is somewhat duller and streakier outside the breeding season.

The crest is reddish-brown rather than black like the breeding drakes. The general characteristics in which all Mergansers share are, their bills are narrow, hooked and serrated, which helps them catch and hold on to their slippery prey.

The brown rat migrated westwards from Central Asia early in the 18th century, and is believed to have first reached Great Britain about 1730.

It is generally black in appearance with a bronze sheen, though the wings are a dark brown rather than a true black. Adults have a small crest on their heads, and normally have a white rump.

The Brown Rat, which is the most common pet rat, traveled by ship to different countries across the globe. It gained prominence in the United States in the 1760's when there were large numbers of European immigrants.

Although it is the same size as a brown rat, the harmless water vole differs in having a chubby face with a blunt nose and short furry ears almost hidden by long fur.

Following the proliferation of introduced cats, dogs, pigs, and black and brown rats on the Galapagos Islands in the 1980s, the Galapagos petrel has suffered a rapid decline in numbers, perhaps as much as on 80 percent reduction.

The two most common species of rat are the black rat and the brown rat. Both species of rat are found in all parts of the world.

At first glance I assumed that this was an Olive Spinetail Cranioleuca obsoleta largely because of its brown rather than rufous crown. However, I was concerned that the entire wing was rufous because the Olive Spinetail has only rufous wing coverts.

The best-known rat species are the Black Rat Rattus rattus and the Brown Rat R. norvegicus. The group is generally known as the Old World rats or true rats, and originated in Asia.

Kingsnakes found on the Outer Banks are usually brown rather than black and have light speckles between the chain-like pattern.

Traveling on ships it infested cargo food and was later carried to America by 1700, where it was common along the Atlantic coasts the brown rat reached Europe probably in the 1727 and America in the 1775.

Similar Species: These lizards superficially resemble Western Fence Lizards, but these have small, smooth scales and the general color is brown rather than gray.
