Status No status assigned in Minnesota. Description This is a small Minnesota species measuring 13-18 inches long (Conant and Collins, 1991). It is nonvenomous. The ground color on the back is a varying shade of brown.

You can tell this one is a newborn by its minute size - compare it with this penny! They are as little as 3.5" long at birth, 9-13" as adults. Brown Snakes are live-bearing - the eggs hatch inside the mother.

DESCRIPTION: 10 to 12 inches in length. It has two rows of dark spots along the back that fade toward the tail. Dark bars may connect the spots, giving the impression of a ladder-like pattern.

Description: A small brown or gray snake with a light stripe down the back bordered by black dots. These dots may join to form crossbars. The belly is white, cream, or pinkish in color. Adult length: 9 to 15 inches.

Marsh Brown Snakes can be found just about anywhere there is a cool dark moist bit of soil - like nicely mulched landscaping - which is where they are often encountered.

The closely related Northern Brown Snake is very similar in appearance, but it does not have the dark lines crossing the back and connecting the dark spots on either side.

True to its name, the brown snake is dark brown to grayish brown in color. It generally has a broad light stripe bordered by dark spots down the back.

Brown snakes never bite when captured. Their only real defense is the musk glands which they freely exercise when first captured.

The brown snake, Storeria dekayi, has eight sub-species, but only one is found in Canada: the northern brown snake, Storeria dekayi dekayi.

This common brown snake likes to live in the surface litter (like leaves) of many habitats. You can find it in oak savannas, prairies, southern lowland hardwoods, marshes, old field, and under trash in vacant city lots.

DeKay’s Brown Snake Storeria dekayi ssp. Common essentially statewide, but lack of records from much of southeastern Coastal Plain may reflect actual scarcity or absence there.

" Brown snakes (Storeria), Hognose snakes (Heterodon), and hatchling rat snakes (Elaphe) are among the snakes that are erroneously called ground rattlers. I guess it is natural to want to sensationalize the stories that are told.

Raptors occur here in good numbers including Martial Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Brown Snake Eagle, African Hawk Eagle, Walhberg's Eagle, Steppe Eagle and Lesser Spotted Eagle.

Miscellaneous: Like their cousin the brown snake, these little snakes may flatten their bodies and emit a foul musk when handled.

In comparison, the Antiguan racer, an inoffensive brown snake living on a small Caribbean island, has a population of around 150!

The caterpillar, which looks a bit like a small, black, white, and brown snake, is considered a pest (because it eats many agricultural species, including orange tree leaves). The chrysalis is brown. This butterfly lives in much of North America.

Just after I got out a snake swam along the beach with its head out of the water and disappeared into the weeds at the edge. A man declared it to be a very poisonous Brown Snake, but I am uncertain of his credentials.
