Brown trout spawn in autumn and the beginning of winter, in a water temperature of about 8°C (46°F). Females make nests in gravelly bottoms in shallow water in rivers and streams. The nest is called a redd. They cover the eggs after they lay them.

Brown trout start life on a diet of invertebrates, but later on some of them switch to eating fish. These larger, predatory individuals are sometimes known as ferox trout, and were once thought to be a different species.

Brown trout naturally occur throughout Europe and western Asia. They range from Finland south to North Africa, west to Iceland and as far east as Afghanistan. Introduced throughout the world, they were first placed in Canadian waters in 1890.

Brown trout are popular fish for anglers fishing streams. Minnesota fisheries managers improve habitat for brown trout. Hatchery brown trout are selectively bred to improve their genetics and they are stocked in streams and sometimes in lakes.

The brown trout is an indigenous species, known around the world and living in all continents. It is commonly found in Slovenia in upper and middle reaches of streams and rivers countrywide, except in the Northeast.
